We caught up with Grimsby Town’s record appearance holder and the current Boston United assistant manager, John McDermott, after Thursday’s friendly at York Street.

Speaking to iFollow about Thursday’s game, he said: “Good test for both teams. Early on, the first 20 minutes, it was a bit rushed, then it settled down.

“Both teams tried to get it down and play a little bit more. I was pleased with our lads – we were very, very good.

“I think Grimsby are going to do well in that league now. What he’s now got is goals, he’s got people who can score goals. That was probably missing last year. I think they are going to do well.”

And Macca recalls playing for the Mariners against The Pilgrims. He added: “I remember a few in the Lincs Cup. I remember a league game when I made a mistake and they scored after about one minute. I think we got a draw out of that game. It’s always a difficult place to come.”
