John McGreal will be aiming for promotion with Colchester United in the Sky Bet League Two 2019-20 season.
Point outside play-offs in 2018-19
The U’s finished eighth last season, on 70 points – a point and a place below Newport County in the final play-off spot.
Colchester had a good campaign, with some very impressive spells, but missed out on the play-offs after a run of six defeats in eight games towards the end of the season.
But McGreal will be hoping his side can maintain their consistency throughout the 2019-20 campaign and return to Sky Bet League One at the fourth time of asking.
John McGreal
The ex-Tranmere Rovers and Ipswich Town defender is currently 12th in the longest-serving EFL and Premier League managers rankings, after taking charge of the U’s on May 4, 2016.
He has won 56, drawn 39, and lost 59 of his 154 games as Colchester boss – his first ever managerial job.
And he will be hoping for his first ever promotion as a manager in the 2019-20 campaign.
Players
Skilful midfielder Brennan Dickenson made the move to newly-promoted Sky Bet League One side MK Dons, while striker Mikael Mandron also left the U’s this summer.
Ex-Town midfielder Harry Pell, striker Frank Nouble, and captain Luke Prosser are all under contract for the 2019-20 campaign.
But last season’s top goalscorer Sammie Szmodics has been linked with a move away from Colchester Community Stadium this summer.
The U’s released 15 U23 players this summer, including defender Aaron Barnes who signed for an undisclosed fee from Torquay United in 2018.
