Michael Flynn will be hoping to take Newport County one step further in Sky Bet League Two 2019-20 after they reached the play-off final in 2018-19.

Newport came within touching distance of Sky Bet League One last season as they lost 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers in extra-time of the League Two play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

The Exiles had an excellent campaign as they finished in seventh-place – the final play-off spot – on 71 points.

They ended the season strongly, going unbeaten in their final 10 league games, but fell at the final hurdle as Connor Jennings struck in the 119th minute to secure promotion for Tranmere Rovers.

But Michael Flynn will be looking to take his side one step further and secure promotion to League One in the 2019-20 season.

Michael Flynn

The former Bradford City, Gillingham, and Newport County defender took charge as Exiles boss in 2017 – initially as caretaker manager – following the sacking of Graham Westley.

Flynn has done a brilliant job so far as Newport manager – he secured the great escape and avoided relegation to the National League in 2017 despite them being 11 points adrift of safety when he took over.

And he built on that in 2017-18 with an 11th-place league finish, as well as helping the Exiles reach the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup, before taking them to the play-off final last term.

And the 38-year-old will be hoping to continue his excellent progress so far as Newport County boss in the 2019-20 campaign.

The Exiles have former Town strikers Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt, as well Scot Bennett, Robbie Willmott, and Keanu Marsh-Brown, under contract for the upcoming season.

Newport secured the signatures of Kyle Howkins and goalkeeper Tom King, while Mark O’Brien and Josh Sheehan both signed contract extensions with the club.

Veteran defender David Pipe retired from the professional game this summer, while Dan Butler signed for Peterborough United, with the Exiles releasing Andrew Crofts, Tyler Forbes, and Will Randall.
