John Askey will take charge of his first full season as Port Vale manager in Sky Bet League Two 2019-20.

Avoided relegation in 2018-19

The Valiants finished comfortably clear of the drop zone last term as they ended the campaign in 20th-place, on 49 points, with an eight-point gap between themselves and 23rd-place Notts County.

They had a difficult campaign last year, and endured a run of just one win in 17 games in all competitions over the winter months as Neil Aspin resigned as boss.

New manager Askey appeared to turn it around, guiding the Valiants to a run of four wins from six games and securing safety.

But they ended the campaign with a five-game winless run, including a 4-1 home defeat to Stevenage in April.

John Askey

Former Macclesfield Town and Shrewsbury Town boss Askey became Vale manager, after Neil Aspin left Vale Park, in February.

He steered the Valiants, who appeared to be right in the middle of a relegation battle, well clear of the drop zone.

Askey guided Macclesfield Town to the National League title in 2017-18, before taking over as Shrewsbury boss – but was sacked after just five months in charge of the League One side.

And the 54-year-old will now be looking to kick on with Port Vale in 2019-20.

The Valiants have signed ex-Nottingham Forest defender Adam Crookes, former Wrexham defender Kieran Kennedy, and Carlisle United striker Richie Bennett ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Manny Oyeleke, Leon Legge, and David Worrall have all signed new deals at Vale Park, while Tom Pope, Ricky Miller, and goalkeeper Scott Brown were already under contract for next season.

But they released a number of first-team players including former Sheffield United midfielder Michael Tonge, and Antony Kay.

Theo Vassell, Mike Calveley, Luke Hannant, Harry Benns, Danny Elliott, Dan Turner, and Dior Angus were also released by the Valiants.
