Ashley Chambers scored in injury time to give Town hope of survival but hit Bournemouth's promotion bid.
Jamie Devitt had put Town ahead from a rebound but Lee Bradbury headed home Brett Pitman's corner to level.
Michael Coulson restored Town’s lead from a corner but Mariners keeper Nick Colgan then let Liam Feeney's shot through his legs for another equaliser.
Cherries sub Jeff Goulding was sent off for an apparent elbow before Chambers hit the winner from close range.
Eddie Howe’s Reaction
Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Solent: "I thought we got what we deserved and Grimsby were the better team.
"It was a difficult place to come, they put us under a lot of pressure and we didn't deal with it.
"It looked like we could have clung on to a point, but I don't think that would have been deserved. We didn't perform."
