Grimsby Ancient Mariners Walking Football Club have broken new ground by organising a session for their over-70s members.
Following a suggestion from Pat Lince to enter a team, if possible, in an over-70s competition which proved not to be viable, the club decided on gauging interest in our own game with the only stipulation that any participant had to be over 70.
The idea blossomed and 25 members turned up to play an hour’s football at Bradley Development Centre, which was a fantastic response from a fantastic group of people.
Playing two 20-minute games of free-flowing football played in the right spirit, strictly refereed by Ken Thompson, who was determined to slow the movement down and clamp down on overly-eager challenges.
The session finished off with two 10-minute halves when the whites eventually beat a guest goalkeeper who will be joining the club next week.
After the session, the players had coffee and teas together at lunch. It was a very enjoyable hour’s football, played on a level playing field with all participating players in the same age bracket.
Next week, the club, apart from their normal Monday and Thursday sessions will be hosting a Wednesday practice match (11 am) for those members going over to Holland to an international tournament In early June. This game will be played to the Holland rules.
New members are always welcome, minimum age is 55, two levels of play. Just come on down to Bradley Development Centre, register and give it a go, you won’t regret it.
