Replay needed after FA Cup tie finishes level

Grimsby Town and Newport County will have to try again to settle their FA Cup first round tie after a 1-1 draw at Blundell Park.

The Mariners took the lead just before half-time when Luke Waterfall's header opened the scoring.

But after pressing for an equaliser for much of the second half, Newport got it through a Padraig Amond penalty with 10 minutes to go.

Neither side could force a winner after that, meaning they will face a replay in south Wales.

Three changes were made to the Town XI that began the last league match at Cambridge before consecutive postponements left them without a game for two Saturdays in a row.

One of those alterations came in goal where Sam Russell came in for captain James McKeown, while Jordan Cook and Ethan Robson also came into the team as Luke Hendrie and Elliott Hewitt missed out.

Russell was protected by a defence made up of Mattie Pollock, Waterfall, Ludvig Ohman and Liam Gibson, while Jordan Cook, Elliott Whitehouse, Jake Hessenthaler and Robson were the midfielders. Matt Green and James Hanson started in attack.

The Grimsby substitutes were Harry Davis, Ahkeem Rose, Joe Starbuck, Harry Clifton, Harry Cardwell, Moses Ogbu and Ollie Battersby.

Newport made the long journey north with some familiar faces in their squad, as former Mariners striker Jamille Matt began the game and ex-Town fans' favourite Amond started on the bench.

A foul on Hanson gave Town an early opportunity to attack but Robson's ball into the box went straight through to keeper Tom King.

At the other end, a cross from George Nurse on the left was met by Matt but his downward header was stopped by Russell.

A deflected effort from Whitehouse went behind for a corner on the right on eight minutes but the ball from Cook's cross was headed clear after Hessenthaler had played it short from the flag.

Ohman was shown the first yellow card of the game for pulling Robbie Willmott back after the winger had beaten him to the ball. The resulting free kick caused no danger though.

Town then won a corner through Whitehouse on the right but it was headed clear, before Gibson's return ball into the box was punched away by King.

Another home corner came on 24 minutes but Robson's low delivery was comfortably dealt with by the Newport defence.

A foul by Green on Josh Sheehan gave the away side a free kick in a dangerous position right of centre on 26 minutes. Ryan Haynes' shot was blocked but Newport worked the ball back into the box for Matt to put it into the net, although the goal was ruled out for offside.

Nurse sent a 25-yard effort into the Pontoon Stand just after the half-hour as both sides struggled to threaten the opposition goal.

An opportunity came at the other end when a Hessenthaler free kick was met by Waterfall but after he headed it back across goal, nobody in black and white was in the right place to apply a finish.

Waterfall did well at the other end to get his head to a cross from Haynes on the right, before Green won another corner on the right but defender Ryan Inniss was first to the ball to head it clear.

Seconds later though, the Mariners were ahead. A great cross from Gibson on the left fell perfectly for WATERFALL and his downward header went underneath King's body before rolling into the net.

Newport's reply saw Joss Jabadie fire harmlessly over the bar from 25 yards just before the fourth official signalled two minutes of additional time to be played at the end of the half.

No more chances came before the referee's half-time whistle, meaning Town went in with the advantage at the interval.

No changes were made before the restart and a foul on Cook five minutes in gave the hosts a chance to get the ball into the danger zone, although Robson's delivery was cleared.

Scot Bennett fired wide from the edge of the box at the other end, before a Newport free kick for a foul by Green was dealt with by the Grimsby defence.

A push by Cook on Labadie gave the away side another free kick but Pollock was in the right place to head Willmott's ball clear.

Newport made a double substitution on 64 minute, with Amond replacing Tristan Abrahams and Corey Whitely coming on for Nurse.

Soon afterwards, Pollock made a brilliant block to stop a powerful shot by Bennett and keep Town's lead intact.

Rose replaced Green in the home side's first substitution on 68 minutes, before the visitors were inches away from an equaliser when a cross from Haynes fell for Amond at the far post but his cushioned header came back off the frame of the goal.

Newport were doing most of the attacking but Town had an opportunity to double their lead with 17 minutes to go through Rose, although he fired wide of the near post from inside the box.

The Mariners were inviting pressure and the away side kept pushing forward in search of a way back into the tie.

Dominic Poleon was the third and final Newport substitute to come off the bench when he replaced Bennett.

Another Grimsby chance came from a free kick which led to a towering header frrom Pollock at the far post but it missed the target.

But soon afterwards, Newport were given their chance to level the scores when a trip was adjudged to be just inside the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. AMOND stepped up and found the net from 12 yards, despipte Russell getting a hand to the ball.

A free kick was sent over the bar by Robson as Town looked to get their lead back with the prospect of a replay looming.

Clifton replaced Whitehouse and his first action of note saw him win a free kick 25 yards out and in a central position. This time, Cook stepped up to take it but the result was the same as the ball went high over the bar.

A volley from Labadie went through to Russell with two minutes to go as Newport pressed for a winner.

Cardwell came on in place of Cook for the closing stages of the game, which was to include a minimum of four added minutes.

A Town free kick on the left eventually led to a throw-in on the opposite side, before another opportunity came when Robson worked some space on the edge of the box but after creating the chance, he could not take it as he sliced the ball wide of the target.

Robson was booked for a foul on Labadie as the midfielder looked to break over the halfway line but after the free kick was taken, the final whistle blew.

The two sides will now meet again in a replay at Rodney Parade to determine who goes through to round two.poppy1.png
