Grimsby Town Women's manager Dale Houlston has been busy once again, and we are delighted to announce that former FA Women's National League player, Kim Brown has put pen to paper to join the Mariners. Kim is the second signing of the summer from a highly successful Barnsley Women's team, that were favourites to win The FA Women's National League Div One North last season prior to it being ended early due to the pandemic. A team that also reached the fourth round of the FA Cup where their cup run was finally halted in a visit to Tottenham Hotspur.
Brown, aged 25, is described as a very experienced player that is versatile in her ability to play in a number of different positions. In addition to being with Barnsley, her former clubs include Sheffield United, where she went down in history as being the first player to score a goal in a women's fixture at Bramall Lane.
Speaking about the signing, manager Dale Houlston told us: "It's another tremendous signing for us isn't it, and another step in the right direction. Kim is a super player with plenty of experience at a much higher level than what we are playing at. She was an ever-present in the Barnsley squad last season, an outstanding team that was on the cusp of being promoted to an even higher level of the FA Women's National League. But hey we are Grimsby Town Women and we are very ambitious about where we would like to take women's football in this area. We know that we have to strengthen in order to do that, and it is heartening to see that players of this calibre are recognising our ambitions and that they want to come along for the ride at our club.
"Kim is a good friend and former team-mate of Sophie Bell and it's thanks in no small part to Sophie that we got the opportunity to meet Kim and that she agreed to come along and join us in some pre-season games".
We asked Kim how she feels about joining the Mariners. She told us: "Amazing, I’d heard good things about the setup and the squad from Sophie (Bell) and it sounded like the perfect club for me to join. I joined up with the squad a week or two ago to see how things went, and my first impressions have been what a quality group of girls they are. They've all been so welcoming and made me feel like I've been here for years. In the games I've featured in we've played some great football and so can’t wait to get started properly now"
When asked what type of player she is, Kim said: "I'm very versatile and happy to play in any position, I’d describe myself as a good reader of the game, able to find passes and quite comfortable with the ball at my feet. The main thing is I always give 100% for the team".
On her hopes and aspirations for her time ahead at Blundell Park, Kim added: "The ambition is to definitely challenge for promotion again this season. I know with the quality we have within this group, and the team spirit and togetherness that's here, then we have every opportunity to achieve this".
