We are delighted to announce that following a number of weeks of discussions, our women’s team have signed Sophie Bell from FA Women’s National League club Barnsley Women’s FC.

Bell, aged 30, is a forward, renowned for her high level of fitness and football talent in equal measures.  She has an outstanding track record in the women’s game, having played for both Sheffield United and Barnsley Women. Last season she was an ever-present in a Barnsley team that looked favourites to win the FA Women’s National League Div 1 North at the time that the season was curtailed early. She was also a key part in Barnsley’s Women’s FA Cup run which saw them eventually defeated in the fourth round at Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking about the signing of Sophie, a delighted manager Dale Houlston said: “This is without any shadow of a doubt a big and exciting signing for us. Sophie is an incredibly talented and experienced player. There is a smashing story to her joining us too; she is actually a life-long Grimsby Town supporter you know.

“She comes along to every home game with her dad. Sophie has reached a stage in her career when fortunately for us she now wants to wear the Grimsby Town shirt that she loves, and she wants to play her part in making history with us as we continue with our journey through the women’s football pyramid. Make no mistake at all; we know just how lucky we are to be signing such a great player”.

When asked what Sophie will bring to the squad Dale added: “Sophie is joining us as a forward. Even though she has had a lot of experience as an extremely capable full-back we know that she is ultimately an attacker, and she is joining us on that basis. Sophie scored something like 8-10 goals last season for Barnsley playing as full-back, and that takes some doing in the Women’s National League Division One North, which is probably the strongest league in the Women's National League Tier 4 divisions”.

Join us on gtfc.co.uk on Saturday for a catch up with the new girl.
