Our women’s team were in pre-season friendly action at Lincoln Moorlands tonight.
The new-look Mariners featured three new faces; Danielle Richardson, Lindsay Crofton and Leah Wray, as well as Sophie Bell, who joined Town last week.
A brace from debutant Sophie Bell, as well as goals from debutant Lindsay Crofton. Alisha Dejonge and Laura Robinson sealed a comfortable 5-1 victory for Dale Houlston’s side.
Speaking after the game, Dale Houlston told us: “Its fantastic to finally play some football after a very long time. We’ve taken 17 players and everyone has played a part in the game on what was an extremely hot night.
“Four new signings have played tonight and they’ve all done very well. Sophie Bell has shown us exactly why we want her at the club, scoring two goals and looking dangerous all of the time. I think she’s hit the bar twice too as well as being involved with other goals with assists. But the information and encouragement she’s given other players has been first class too. Young Beth Wharton has come off the pitch tonight absolutely buzzing and she’s commented how great it is to play alongside Sophie with the encouragement and advice she’s given her.
“We’ve also had a trialist in the team tonight who has got bags of FA Women’s National League experience, and she’s looked every bit the player we knew she would be. We’ve had a good chat after the game and she’s told me that she has really enjoyed herself. She fitted in so well with the spirit of the group, and she is a cracking person. So easy to get along with and to see her integrate so nicely with the group, you’d have thought they had been teammates for years. We’ve agreed to work together towards a decision over the next week or so, but I’m confident that something will be agreed and that she will be a Grimsby Town player this season.
“The result was nice for the girls, in a game where we’ve tried something a bit different to normal in the formation. But the main thing was getting some minutes into the player's legs”.
