GTSET Shadow Scholarship Launched

4 December 2020

Grimsby Town is delighted to announce the creation of a new U19 side in 2020. The Grimsby Town FC U19 shadow scholarship squad is a brand new team developed by Grimsby Town Sports and Education Trust (GTSET) and Franklin College Sixth Form in, based at Blundell Park.

The course is aimed at talented 16-year-old players who are looking for a career in the game, are aiming to study sport at university or are looking for a job in the sports industry.

The scholarship is a unique blend of a football experience with a full-time education course. The U19 shadow squad will aim to provide a possible alternative pathway into the professional game and Grimsby Town FC’s Youth Team.

Successfully chosen scholars will take part in 3 football training sessions a week, complete strength and conditioning plans, as well as represent Grimsby Town U19 shadow team in the EFL Community & Education Football Alliance (CEFA) playing other professional teams’ U19 shadow squads. Scholars will work with UEFA B Futsal and Football qualified coach Mark Westerby and goalkeeper specialist Robbie Aldrich.

On top of football, scholars will work towards achieving a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching. The course has no exams and is largely based on coursework and work-based learning, using GTSETs and Grimsby Town FC links to coaching at grassroots level as a valuable work experience.

All training takes place at Franklin College Sixth Form, where you will get all the benefits of a Franklin student. All lessons take place at GTSETs Education Suite at Blundell Park.
