Goals from Elliott Whitehouse, Charles Vernam, and a Billy Clarke penalty helped move Town up to 15th in the league table – still with two games in hand on some teams in the division.

And Holloway was delighted with the victory as the Mariners earned their third win of the month.

He said: “I thought the lads showed great spirit – they bounced back against a very tough opponent.

“The level of the play probably wasn’t as good as it was against Crawley if I’m brutally honest, but that last goal from Charles really pleased me.

“Charles’s goal was fantastic and for lots of reasons I’m very, very pleased.

“I was pleased with the crowd on a very, very bitterly cold night, and I’m very pleased because that’s a massive three points for us.

“We’re still one of the teams that haven’t lost when they’ve scored the first goal in a league game this season, so that’s a big thing for us.

“I’m also very proud because two of our lads were great friends with Jordan Sinnott, who passed away, and our lads have thanked them for their efforts today.

“All our hearts are broken for the Sinnotts, and well done to our lads for playing with that pride and passion that their mate would have loved.”

Holloway also praised Vernam’s wonder-goal, and his growing confidence.

He said: “We’ll call him Sir Charles after that! Run with it, run with it, run with it, bang.

“It was a hell of a goal, and we’re in League Two, and it’s a joy – that’s just a fantastic goal, and it would grace any level.

“And you try and stop him – the confidence is just oozing from him at the minute, and it’s wonderful to see.

“I remember seeing him score 30 goals in one season when he was a young kid, so that shows how old I am!”
