We are delighted to announce that our women's team has signed 22-year-old defender Laura Saxby.

Laura is an experienced defender that has spent a number of season's playing in the league above the Mariners with Grimsby Borough Ladies. She is described as a capable defender, extremely passionate and with a good competitive edge. Laura is known to both the coaching team and some of the players in the squad.

Speaking about the signing, manager Dale Houlston commented: "It's great to have Laura on-board with us and I am sure she is going to really enjoy being a part of what we are building here for women's football. It came to our attention that a couple of key players at Grimsby Borough had decided to stop playing football for whatever reason, and Laura was one of those who came highly recommended by Hayley Butts on our coaching team, as well as one or two of our players that have played alongside Laura previously who have also been complimentary about her.

“Up until she stopped playing at Borough recently, she had been an ever-present in their team with an impressive number of appearances in the league above us over a number of seasons. She is a defender that is most comfortable playing as a centre half, but she is able to play anywhere across the back four.”

And Laura was delighted to be greeted by the Grimsby Town first team manager, Ian Holloway. She said: “It was great to meet the manager, he’s very passionate and very down to earth too.”

Describing herself as a player, Laura said: “I started playing football when I eight, I joined Clee when I was about 15, left and went to Healing, then took a year out before joining Grimsby Borough.

“I used to play at right-back, got moved to centre-back and became known as ‘last-ditch tackle’. I like to think as myself as a confident centre back,” Laura added.

Laura is expected to be in the Town side that travels to Grantham Town for a County Cup tie on Sunday morning (10.45 am).
