On this day in 1991, over 14,000 fans packed into Blundell Park and watched Town clinch promotion with a 2-1 win against Exeter City. Two goals by John Cockerill sealed the famous victory.
Cockerill beat the offside trap to run onto a Paul Futcher free-kick. The midfielder crashed home a right-footed shot from inside the box to send the crowd wild.
Cockers repeated the act just before the break, forcing home Tommy Watson’s cross at the far post to seemingly put the Mariners in an impregnable position.
But Exeter had other ideas and when Cooper reduced the deficit with a rasping shot into the top corner seven minutes into the second half the doubts began to surface.
And when news filtered through that promotion rivals Bolton were winning, there was suddenly an air of nervous tension.
Hearts skipped a beat when centre-back Shaun Taylor’s header hit the post and fans held their breath when former Mariner Gordon Hobson flicked in a shot which brought a fine save from Steve Sherwood.
But Town held on and fans flooded onto the pitch to celebrate.
