Speaking after the game, he said: It’s a very tough situation. For the group, that’s the first time that team has played together, and there’s no point in sugar-coating it, that’s going to be tough.
“Every one of them is starting to understand what we need to do, and we played a really good team here.
“That’s what you do. You build some belief and strength. I took a gamble, I wanted to get at their back three because not many people do, they’re so well-organised, and I took a risk playing 3-4-3.
“It could have backfired, but it didn’t.
“There were signs of us being a really good outfit, and as I say we played a really, really good team, so I’m absolutely delighted. They’ve been together a long time, they had success last year, and he’s added to it, he didn’t lose anybody.
“I’m absolutely delighted with the spirit, it’s going to be a lovely trip back home.”
“Normally you need five or six weeks to do pre-season training, but we haven’t seen each other for 14 days before last Wednesday. It’s quite remarkable.
“It’s nice because I said we might have to change our name to Grimsby Town Nil!,” he added.
