Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of experienced attacker, Joel Grant on an initial one-year deal.
The 33-year-old becomes Paul Hurst's latest recruit of a busy summer period and the manager admitted it's not the first time he has tried to bring Grant to Blundell Park.
"I have known about Joel for a long time. I once spoke to him about trying to bring him to Grimsby years ago, now obviously that didn't come off but I'm delighted that he's here now.
"He is a player who is technically very good, very comfortable on the ball and as you can see throughout his career, he can score goals and that is something that we are trying to add to the squad. He's already shown it in training this morning, getting a very good shot away and a great goal.
"He's got very good experience and he has played the majority of his career at a higher level, but I got a good impression from him about his desire and his hunger that he wants to help us achieve something here. He wants to be fighting at the right end of the table and wants to progress with the team and our squad. His age doesn't concern me at all, as all the players we have been doing our research and he has been very highly talked of, thought of and he will fit in very well with our group."
Beginning his career at Watford progressing through the Academy system, Grant impressed as a youngster making 10 first-team appearances in total before being rewarded with his first professional contract in 2006. Following a successful loan period at Aldershot Town, Grant made the move permanent helping secure the league title in 2008 before his progression up the footballing pyramid commenced.
In total, Grant has made over 450 Football League appearances for clubs such as Crewe Alexandra, Wycombe Wanderers, Yeovil Town, Exeter City, Plymouth Argyle and most recently Swindon Town. Between 2014 and 2016, Grant also represented Jamaica on 14 occasions, scoring twice against Egypt and Chile respectively.
Grant spoke exclusively to GTTV this morning, prior to taking part in his first pre-season session.
"I spoke to the manager, who spoke to my representatives and then I decided that this is the place for me. It's been in the pipeline for a few weeks, I spoke to the manager in the last week or so but it's been going on for a few weeks, I am here and looking forward to getting started.
"I wouldn't say that the manager had to sell the club to me. Just his enthusiasm and the buzz that he has about where he wants this club to go definitely made it a lot more convincing. He is a good manager and I know he has big plans for the club.
"I am a player who likes to entertain, but more importantly I want to bring some goals and assists. I am a forward player, the game has changed if you had asked me about five years ago I would have said I am an out and out winger, but I feel I have adapted my game quite well and especially in the modern game there are so many formations but I am a forward player who likes to attack, create chances and I always like to score goals."
