James McKeown reflects on a special day back in front of Town fans, and manager Paul Hurst pays tribute to McKeown and the Town fans after the Rotherham United testimonial
Listen to James McKeown after he celebrated 10 years with the Mariners with his testimonial against Rotherham United.
The occasion was made all the more special with supporters finally making their return home after 17 months away.
“I was a bit embarrassed,” McKeown told GTTV.
“The reception I got was so lovely, the walkout was wonderful, and it was so nice for my kids to experience it, although I did feel like a bit of an idiot to be honest!"
And his boss Paul Hurst paid tribute to McKeown and the club’s supporters after his long-serving goalkeeper was given a rousing reception at his testimonial.
“Firstly, it was great to get the fans back in here, and there were certainly a few occasions when you could hear the roar and the songs, and it kind of took me back,” Hurst said.
“And secondly, a really good turnout for Macca, and a great day. He’ll just be disappointed that he didn’t quite keep that clean sheet!
“Thanks to Rotherham for coming and being very supportive of the occasion for Macca.
“I gave him the captain’s armband just before we came out, and he went off down the tunnel and it was like ‘right, we’ll have to get him back because he’s not going out first!’
