Town Confirm Sousa Transfer

22 June 2021

Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of former Darlington FC winger Erico Sousa on a one-year-deal.

The former Portugal Under-19 International made the move to England at the age of 10 and began his footballing career as a schoolboy at Manchester City, before making the move to Barnsley as a scholar before penning his first professional contract at the club.

Erico moved to Slovenia in 2015 to sign for Celje before coming back to England originally with Tadcaster Albion before spells at Accrington Stanley and Tranmere Rovers. Sousa returned to Accrington Stanley in 2017, helping to achieve promotion to League One during the 2017/18 season with a total of ten appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals.

Last season, Sousa joined National League North side Darlington, where he scored seven goals and contributed with three assists in 14 appearances before the curtailment of the 2020/21 campaign.

Sousa's exciting and direct attacking style on the wings attracted the attention of a number of clubs but is thrilled at the opportunity to play in front of the Town supporters this season.

"It feels really good to be here, I'm happy to finally sign my contract and now I'm looking forward to getting started.

"The gaffer got in touch with me about a week ago after speaking to my agent, after sorting out the ins and outs of bits. The mindset of the gaffer and the club [played a deciding factor], I love the fans, I have been here before even though I didn't get to play, I've seen what the fans are like so I am just looking forward to playing and showing them what I have got in front of them.

"The aim is to jump straight back up this season. To me, the goal is promotion, anything else under that is an underachievement really, with the team that we will have this season."

Assistant Manager Chris Doig spoke to our official YouTube channel this afternoon. "Erico is a winger who has been at Darlington and in the League before.

"He is very direct and pacy, likes to take on defenders, creating chances and comes up with the odd goal. He is technically very good, will work very hard for the team and I am sure that he will be a player that the fans will take to and will bring a lot of excitement to the team".

You can watch Erico's first interview with the club over on our official YouTube channel. You can also catch Erico's best bits from last season below.
