Youth Team Progress In FA Youth Cup

14 October 2021

Grimsby Youth Team made the long trip over to Chester on Wednesday night for the FA Youth Cup 3rd Qualifying Round. The winners would progress to the first round proper drawn on Monday.

Chester started the brighter and had a few long throws into the box and free kicks but the Town backline was alert and stood strong.

As the game progressed, Town got the more of a foothold and was controlling possession deeper in the pitch albeit Chester conceding a lot of space, Town worked the ball well side to side and was patient in their approach but at times sloppy to start.

Milner’s shot from distance stung the palms of the keeper, and Markham’s header from a corner went over the bar.

On the 20 minute mark, Zerboni played Braithwaite who’s delivery aimed at Tomlinson was fumbled by the keeper only for Essel to be on hand to smash home and give Town a 1-0 lead.

Town continued to control possession but found very few openings. Chester continued to load set pieces into the Town box but to no avail.

In the second half, Town looked much sharper and brighter in possession, continuing to control the game but higher up the pitch and creating some good opportunities with some smart play, Boyd, Braithwaite and Essel all saw their attempts well saved by the keeper.

At the other end, Chester had a fine effort from 25 yards which came back off the bar and was a threat with their set-pieces but the Town backline held out to secure their place in the next round.

Next up for Town is league action away at Huddersfield.
