Women's Team 100% Record Continues

28 September 2021

Our women's team continued with their impressive start to the season on Sunday, with their their straight win in a row.

The visitors were Sleaford Town Women, and Town registered a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Ellie Wilson and Amber Sharp.

The Mariners dominated proceedings throughout the game and had it not been for some sharper finishing and an impressive display from the Sleaford goalkeeper, then the scoreline would have been greater.

Chance after chance came Town's way in the first half, until eventually in the 36th minute, a well-worked pattern of play saw Holly Smith turn provider with an excellent cross into the box, where the ever-reliable Ellie Wilson was there to finish coolly.

After the break, the Mariners remained in control of the game, and on 63 minutes, Beth Wharton split the Sleaford defence with a well-timed pass to the advancing Amber Sharp. Sharp beat the keeper with a well-struck shot, in what was her first-ever senior goal and a moment to cherish for the young forward.

Libbi Wright celebrated what she thought was a tremendous long-range goal in the 70th minute. Confusion prevailed though, and Town fans were jubilant when they could clearly see the Sleaford goalkeeper fishing the ball back out of the net. But sadly the strike was ruled out by the eagle-eyed referee, who had spotted that the ball had in some way gone out of play off the roof of the goal, before spinning and returning back into play and into the back of the net.  Wright was adamant that the goal was good, but unfortunately, it was ruled out.

After the game, we caught up with assistant manager Hayley Cox who told us, "I was really pleased with the overall performance and felt we deserved to win. We dominated the game, and on another day that would have been a bigger scoreline".

This Sunday the Mariners travel to Dronfield Town in The Vitality FA Women's Cup second preliminary round.
