The experienced 33-year-old defender became Russell Slade's fourth summer signing as he teamed up with his old boss again.

Clarke has worked under manager Russell Slade on two occasions at his former clubs, with the gaffer being an important aspect of his move to the Mariners. "It's massive for me working with Russell, I know how he likes to work", said Clarke. "I've obviously worked with him before and we get on really well, so him being at the club was a big thing for me".

Clarke began his playing career at Huddersfield Town, where he developed through the clubs Academy system, making his first team debut at the age of 17 against Stoke City in a 1-1 draw. Clarke spent 11 years at The Terriers making over 300 competitive appearances for the club, before joining Russell Slade at Leyton Orient in the summer of 2012, where the manager made him captain.

In three years at Orient, Clarke made over 120 appearances for the club before making the move to Bradford City in 2015, before eventually being re-united with Russell Slade at Coventry City on January 1st 2017, where he was again made skipper. In his short spell at Coventry, Clarke made 18 appearances for the club.
