The twenty-year-old became Russell Slade's sixth signing of the summer, after impressing during a trial period with The Mariners.
Cardwell began his playing career at Hull City, where he played within the Academy system from the age of 12, before leaving for Reading FC at the age of 16. During his time at The Royals, he spent time on loan at Woking and Braintree Town respectively, appearing against The Mariners in the second leg of our National League Play-off Semi Final against The Iron.
In January 2017, Cardwell joined Premier League new-boys, Brighton & Hove Albion on loan until the end of the 16/17 season, before returning to Reading to see out the remainder of his contract.
Cardwell has also represented the Scottish National team, appearing for Scotland Under 19s on 9 occasions, scoring twice. He has also appeared for Scotland Under 21s on one occasion.
In his first season with The Mariners, Cardwell struggled for a regular place during the first half of the season, before securing a place towards the end of the season, starting 7 of the final 10 games of the season.
